What smashing weather we have right now. It’s definitely not just me who has the urge to go outside and go to the beach or just be in this beautiful sunshine. Weather like this makes me just want to go and explore. There are many road trips I still want to do but haven’t got around to it yet.
Though Ireland is only a small country, there are many different scenic road trips you can take. We are surrounded by water after all. Luckily enough I lived on the West Coast for eight years, very close to the Atlantic Ocean… in fact a ten minute drive, if even. Over those years, friends and my mum got to see quite a good few sights but my bucket list hasn’t been completed yet. Over the last few years the Wild Atlantic Way has become a very popular route. It goes from the top of Donegal right down to Cork. So you would need a few days to go through all that.
Giants Causeway
Not part of the Wild Atlantic Way but certainly a must see. It is said that the path was created by a giant, hence the name but it’s not clear really these days. I have visited the Giant’s Causeway many times before however I never managed to walk the famous Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. For me it would be a three hours drive, doable in a day if you leave early in the morning.
Slieve League
We visit the Slieve League Cliffs a few years ago which is right at the top of County Donegal. I may go back though as we didn’t actually climb them to the top. The views are supposed to be incredible. You may not think it, but these cliffs are one of the highest ones in Europe. The highest point is approx. 609m.
Downpatrick Head
This wasn’t actually a sight that was on the radar. My mum and me used to take random roads from Sligo and find all brown signs. Brown signs in Ireland mostly mean sightseeing. Downpatrick Head is actually located in County Mayo which is not too far from Sligo. To get to the cliff you actually need to go through one of those sheep gates. Luckily at the time there were no sheeps. It’s a stunning view but on windy days you want to stay clear off the edge.
Cliffs of Moher
Probably the most touristy spot in Ireland. I have been with my mum many many years ago. But as time goes on technology improves and back then my photos were not that nice so I would love to go back one day. It is a big track coming from the East coast but it wouldn’t be top of my bucket list anyway.
Ring Of Kerry
Kwik Fit has put together a guide to the most popular road trips across Europe. One being the Ring of Kerry (Download PDF at the bottom of this post) The Ring of Kerry has the most stunning views during the Summer. I have never managed to go. I probably require maybe three days and connect it with other sights close by. It is recommended to drive anticlockwise due to the narrow roads.
