Dear Matthew,
it is my annual post dedicated to you. This morning you woke up excitedly at 6.30am on the button. The difference of today to any other day is, you are one year older. We can’t believe you are seven years old already. When you got out of your bed this morning, you walked straight downstairs to check out what presents are waiting for you. You were so excited to see all the Pokemon bits mummy and daddy picked for you. Once we were all dressed, you waited patiently until everyone was downstairs and then you dug into opening up your presents.
Within this last year, you have successfully finished school in the senior infants class. In just two days you will step into first class and see all your school friends again. It will be the first time you get to meet your, hopefully, nice teacher. Another year of learning will be ahead of you and I am sure you will do amazing. You are definitely eager to learn. Reading and writing and is one of your favourite things to do and there was plenty of it during your eight week Summer holidays. Your writing is so neat and lovely now, I knew you would get there eventually.
You are becoming more and more adventurous with food and you are willing to try every new food first, before making the decision whether you like it or not. Your sister could learn from that sometimes. At the moment your favourite fruit has got to be water melon. If I would let you, you would finish a whole baby water melon yourself. At least it’s very healthy.
This year you were lucky enough to go on two holidays. One was a staycation in Center Parcs and the other one was in Germany. You were finally old enough to understand where mammy was born, where mammy went to school etc. Luckily we had great weather for both holidays. You enjoyed playing with mammy’s long term friends son despite the language barrier. You got to hear mummy speak German which you found quite funny. Sometimes you are happy to pick up a few words but other times you’d rather not.
We have now moved from indoor football to GAA outside on the pitch. At first you were not too keen on it and we still hear a few moans here and there on the day of training. But once you are on the pitch you are loving it. It’s nice to see you so active and enjoy the running and scoring goals. In just two weeks time you are going to start your first tennis lessons. We took you onto the court a few times in the past and slowly you are getting the hang of it. With a few tennis lessons, you could be a really good tennis player, just like your daddy.
The tooth fairy was a busy one this year. To date you have lost six teeth so far with another one wobbly again. Instead of spending every fiver you get, you decided to save up and spend it on something bigger in the shop. You haven’t made a decision what it is going to be though. I honestly don’t know what weight you are at the moment but buying trousers can be a bit tricky sometimes. T-shirts and jumpers you can easily wear a size 7-8 soon enough but trousers a size 6-7 still fits you comfortably. Your feet have only gone up by barely one size in the last year. I started to buy size 13 as you are now measuring a 12.5.
At the beginning of the year the hype for Pokemon started in creche. You are truly a big fan of it now. You love collecting all the different type of Pokemons in form of a card. Mammy has become quite addicted to it as well and I love helping you out on your latest Nintendo Switch game to try and capture all Pokemons you can get in. Your understanding of playing with toys at the moment, is in form of plain white paper. You could spend all day drawing out Pokemon and you are actually very good at copying them.
And finally this weekend you are going to have your birthday party with all your friends. We hope you are going to have an absolute ball. There will be lots of playing, sweating and giggling I am sure.
We love you very much.
