How I handle the Laundry on a daily basis

Every parent will agree with me on this one. Doing the laundry on a daily basis is a pain in the backside.  I have to admit I am not the biggest fan of it but it is not something I can avoid doing. When you are a full-time working mum like me, it’s even harder but it is manageable.

Seeing the end of the laundry basket is such a sigh of relief but I can count on one finger how often that happened before it filled up again. When you have two children who are guaranteed to come home with dirty clothes every day and a husband who plays tennis, a laundry system is very important. I am not sure if it’s any easier handling the laundry when you are a stay at home mum. I can only speak from a working mum perspective.

Washing clothes doesn’t always suit me, particularly when it comes to removing a stain. Sometimes it works and it feels like a big achievement and other times I am forever struggling to get that one stain out of Matthew’s uniform. This is currently a blueberry stain, I don’t think I am the only one struggling with this I hope. Both my kids have dry skin and Matthew had eczema when he was a baby. Thankfully he has grown out of it now and we’re only left with dry skin on the arms and legs.

Taking this into account, it is very important to use the softest washing powder. It has been trial and error over the years and it seems Fairy Non-Bio is much better on their skin than Persil Non-Bio. It is specifically for sensitive skin after all. A few months ago I also started using Comfort Pure fabric conditioner which makes their clothes extra soft.

We have a laundry basket upstairs which stores all clothes including the kids, parents and bedding. Depending on the amount I have to wash, I would usually have one load on once a day. Before I head to work in the morning, I would go upstairs and make a pile ready to throw into the washing machine. I generally keep the kids clothes seperate from our own clothes. This will make two piles. Then of course, anything that is white I will throw together and have another load on as well. As we don’t own that many whites, I will throw Matthew’s shirts and hubby’s shirts into one load.

I have the clothes horse sitting in the office to dry tops and trousers. Anything that can go into the dryer such as socks, underwear and certain shirts I will make use of the dryer. It just speeds up things. At some point I will end up with a pile of laundry that has to be ironed. To be honest ironing is my absolute pet hate. I leave it to the very last minute until hubby has like one or two shirts left. Then I normally spend two hours or so ironing the whole lot.

As we live in a modern world other solutions are available when it all gets a bit too much. One of them is a company called Laundryheap. Laundryheap was founded in 2014 and has expanded pretty quick in those four years. You can avail of their service in the UK (London, Birmingham and Manchester so far), Dubai, USA (Boston), Amsterdam, as well as Dublin which makes it very exciting for us.

The way it works is pretty simple… A driver will pick up your load on the same day you made the order either on the website or on the mobile app. Within less than 24 hours the driver will bring your clothes back to you clean, ironed or dry cleaned, whichever service you have chosen. Particularly dry cleaning places I find they can take up to four days sometimes. We did find ourselves in a rush for a suit or a shirt sometimes. To date LaundryHeap have cleaned over two million pieces of clothing and completed more than 250,000 deliveries.  This to me sounds promising and a service I will try for sure.

How do you handle your daily laundry?

Oh yeah specifically when you run a B&B the bedding needs to be straight and all. I never bother with mine. It comes out whatever way it comes out of the dryer lol

Laundry is literally my nemesis…. my big (man-shaped) boy creates stacks of washing, all by himself, but since we had the twins, it’s trebled!! I hate washing — this service sounds like a dream 🙂

What a fantastic idea, and how handy! We live in the middle of no-where so sadly don’t have a service so convenient, but I did learn early on in running the B&B that I would need to send the bed linen out or else I would spend my whole working day doing laundry!

Oh that is totally the dream: to have someone pick up my washing and bring it back! It’s so hard when you’re a full time working Mum! Yes, it’s manageable, but an extra job I could do without!
